I illustrated the book「水中遺跡は面白い」(“Nautical Archeology is Fun”) by Professor Randy Sasaki.
I worked closely with the publisher 株式会社筑摩書房 (Chikuma Shobo Inc), to finalize the illustrations, graphs and the map of Japan.
The black and white illustrations are a combination of vector and pixel layers, often aided by 3D models to keep proper scale. The six illustrations were primarily drawn in Adobe Fresco on an iPad Pro.
The Vasa illustration required a lot of initial Photoshop for the pen tool to get an accurate depiction of the frame of the ship, the masts, and the sails, and then the gradient shading for the sails. A 3D model of Stockholm was used to determine the proper scale for the background.
List of illustrations:
- 6 title page illustrations (with and without the title text)
- 1 graphic of the difference between the Chinese ships and the Korean ships in the Mongol invasion fleet
- 1 graphic of the Irohamaru boat wreck
- 1 map of Japan
The map wasn’t very stylized other than tilting the plane and adding the drop shadow to give it some depth.
The diagrams of the Mongol ship differences and the boat wreck, were done in Blender with finishing touches in Photoshop.
